CS 401 First Post

This is my first post for CS 401 this semester!

I am very excited to be in this class and receive some on hands experience working with open source software. I personally am not too familiar with open source software apart from open office and I have never experienced what it is like to contribute to an open source project either. I do have a good amount of experience working in teams, but never entirely over the internet it will be very rewarding to see how real life large projects function with people contributing from all over. This seems like it will be my most interesting Computer Science course thus far and I hope that I can take what I learn from this course into my future career.

CS401 First Post

Well, this is my first blog post for the CS401 course. Most of the stuff mentioned in the class so far is stuff that I already have experience with, or at least understand the concepts behind. It will be good to get more experience using some of the tools like source control and tracker. I’ve used them somewhat, but it will be nice to get a more well rounded experience with them.

I am hoping that we get to do some work for the Irrlicht project, but if not I wouldn’t mind working on Firefox, since I am already fairly comfortable with C++ and JavaScript.

First Post for CS 401

It was the first day of class for the CS 401 group.

The first accomplishment of the class we divided the class into randomly selected groups, reviewed Open Source Software, Licenses, and skills to be obtained through the course work.

WSU CS Department Now Has A Blog!

The Worcester State University CS Department now has its own blog at http://10.33.2.16. It was set up to act as an aggregator, so that faculty and students in the department can contribute posts.

I had it set up primarily for the students in my CS 401 class to blog about their Open Source project work, but anyone in the department can submit posts about their classes, projects, or research. It is my hope that it will serve to build a community within the department, so that we can all learn about the cool and interesting things that the members of the department are doing.

The blog is running as a WordPress instance, with the FeedWordPress plugin doing the aggregation. Erin McLaughlin, who is helping me with preparation for my Spring 2011 CS 401 class, did the grunt work of the WordPress install. Thanks Erin!
