Pattern: Expose Your Ignorance

Reflection: I really resonate with the idea of embracing ignorance as a natural part of learning, especially in an industry where it feels like you need to know everything. Admitting what we don’t know can be tough, but I’ve learned that it actually creates a better environment for learning.

Embracing Vulnerability: Admitting that we don’t know something can make us feel vulnerable, but it’s also a powerful way to build trust within our teams. Being humble and honest about our knowledge gaps encourages others to do the same. It creates an atmosphere where asking questions and seeking help are seen as strengths rather than weaknesses.

Shift in Mindset: It’s a real game-changer to shift our mindset away from always needing to appear competent. Instead, focusing on showing our ability to learn and adapt makes us more resilient. It takes away the fear of failing and makes us more willing to take on challenges. Plus, it encourages us to keep improving, which is crucial in such a fast-paced field.

Craftsmanship Analogy: Comparing software development to craftsmanship really speaks to me. Like a craftsman honing their skills, we need to keep expanding our knowledge base. It’s not about being an expert right away, but about constantly growing and learning. Expertise comes with time and practice.

Personal Experience: I’ve seen firsthand how embracing ignorance has helped me grow both personally and professionally. Being open about what I don’t know and actively seeking to learn has boosted my confidence and strengthened my relationships at work. Asking questions and being open to feedback have been key in my development as a developer.

Conclusion: “Expose Your Ignorance” is a great reminder that it’s okay not to have all the answers. By embracing our ignorance and actively seeking knowledge, we create opportunities for growth and improvement. It’s a lesson I’ll definitely keep in mind as I continue on my career path.

CS-448: Week 12

The Deep End

“The Deep End” pattern is about feeling unsatisfied with the path taken when learning new skills. The path taken has been small, safe steps that has made the learning process plateau. A way to jump start the learning process is by challenging yourself with bigger things such as bigger projects, working with larger teams, more complex projects, etc.

A solution to this pattern is to jump into the deep end, rather than waiting until you are ready. This is because the latter can lead to never starting anything, or challenging yourself to learn new skills. When a difficult problem occurs, rather than shying away, diving into the deep end and facing the problem head on is what will help in the long run. However there are some risks that are involved with going straight into the deep end. A risk is that you may get overwhelmed and fail. Although you may fail, failing is not necessarily a bad thing. Being prepared to fail, and recovering is what drives growth and provides opportunities that would be lost if the risk was never taken in the first place.

As mentioned before, in order to grow, bigger projects need to be made as a way to challenge yourself. Previous project’s size can be quantified by looking into those previous projects and marking down how many lines of code was written with how many developers. After reviewing all previous work, a chart can be made to see where how the next project compares.

Conclusion

I enjoyed reading about this pattern. I found the action to the pattern to be interesting because creating a chart, representing the size of your previous work, is something I would not have thought to do. However that process can be useful when determining if a project is at a large enough scale that can challenge previous projects. The pattern has changed the way I think about failure and taking risk. I like how the pattern paints the potential of failure as something that should be invited because I feel that failure is something that is not normally deemed acceptable. The pattern has ultimately changed the way I think about taking risks because risks and recovering from failures are what key to growth.

The Nurture Your Passion pattern is about how important it is to protect and grow your passion for software craftsmanship even in some environments where it might not be supported. This pattern also talks about the challenges that people as software developers face in certain environments where their passion for the craft isn’t supported. Not only does it acknowledge the challenges faced by software developers in environments that may not fully support their passion but also provide strategies to navigate and thrive in those situations. Use certain strategies to protect and nurture your passion by working on what you like and drawing your own career path. The pattern shows that the real challenges that software developers face are when their passion for coding isn’t given its due, so they use a strategy to make their work more passionate. I felt like this pattern emphasizes preserving passion when a challenge comes around and finding a nurturing environment for that passion in software development. It’s great advice to work on tasks that interest you and also make sure to look for supportive people who like your ideas to motivate your success. It’s changed the way I think about my career path and how I should go about challenges in that journey, it’s important to be passionate about work but if it doesn’t give you a purpose or challenge you it’s important to find something that does.

 This pattern wants to encourage people to make sure that their career path has a purpose and that they’re passionate about it. It makes me want to be part of an environment that fits my values even if challenging. It’s not just about writing code; it’s about making sure every step in your career journey feels meaningful. seeking out a workplace that aligns with your values, even if it means tackling some tough challenges along the way. This pattern is a reminder that staying driven and having a clear sense of purpose in your career is everything, even when the going gets tough. CS-448 Week 12 Study the Classics

The pattern “Study the Classics” highlights the importance of remembering and familiarizing yourself with foundational topics and the timeless concepts in software development. This is especially true for individuals with practical or self-taught backgrounds. It suggests that rather than feeling overwhelmed by the vast array of literature available, one should focus on reading books that have stood the test of time and continue to offer very valuable insights into the field.

What I find compelling about this pattern is the emphasis on the enduring relevance of classic texts in a rapidly evolving industry. It underscores the notion that while technologies may change, fundamental principles and concepts often remain consistent. Studying these fundamental texts will allow individuals to gain a deeper understanding of underlying principles that drive software development, which enables them to make more informed decisions and adapt to new technologies more effectively.

This pattern influenced my perspective on professional development and has reinforced the importance of continuous learning and reflection in my intended profession. Rather than focusing solely on the latest trends or technologies, I now see the value in investing time to study classic texts that offer timeless wisdom and insights.

Valuing ‘HARD’ Skills: A Key to Professional Success

This week, I decided to read the “Concrete Skills” section of the “Emptying the Cup” chapter. This section discusses and highlights the importance of having strong technical skills, as well as good team skills, in order to be a promising and invaluable candidate for any prospective employers. I recognize that others who have been in the workforce longer, regardless of past profession, will have a head start on my soft or team skills by having more work and life experience than I possibly can at this exact moment. With this knowledge, I must understand that having soft skills alone won’t get me a position anywhere, since even though I do have some experience, it is very limited. By focusing on my hard or technical skills, I will be able to show any employer the types of direct contributions I can make to the team without needing to be taught or walked through.

I haven’t had the opportunity to gain software-related work experience, but I have been able to acquire some experience from a position working with data for around a year now. Even with that being said, I know I am still a risk to any employer since I still have yet to get my first position on a software team. By ensuring I have a strong foundation of technical skills, I can show to any future employer of mine that I can and will contribute to the team in a mutually beneficial way. In exchange for giving me a chance to learn and improve upon my craft, I will bring the pre-existing technological skills I possess to contribute to the optimization of any team’s efficacy.

Of course, as time goes on, I will become less focused on my technical skills and find the balance between displaying my “hard” skills as well as my “soft” skills complemented by any experience or achievements I will gain in the future. But at this current moment, I understand I don’t have that luxury, and any employment in the near future will be solely focused on my skills and what I could bring to the table.

Overall, this section reinforces the necessity of strength in the technical abilities of an entry-level prospective employee to ensure that their ability and understanding of programming will help jumpstart their journey into becoming a master craftsman. Over time, however, building a balance between technical and team skills, complemented by my future achievements, will be key to progressing from apprentice to journeyman and, one day, to a master.

These books offer a extent of wisdom and insight that goes beyond what can be found in blogs or online resources.

To manage the overwhelming number of books one may wish to read, the article suggests implementing a Reading List—a  list of books to read and those already read. This list serves as a personal curriculum, allowing individuals to prioritize their learning and track their progress over time. By making this list public, others can benefit from suggestions and contribute their own recommendations, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

The article introduces the concept of “Reading Constantly,” advocating for a steady intake of programming books to deepen one’s understanding of the field. It advises against rushing through books and emphasizes the importance of timing—reading the right book at the right time can significantly enhance the learning experience.

Additionally, the article encourages exploration of classic literature in the field, alongside more contemporary resources. It suggests asking mentors for recommendations and seeking out long-lived books that offer timeless insights into software development.

This was a good read to mark the importance of the continuation of learning and reading even after graduation and starting the professional career. It opens up the eyes for readers so that they grow and learn more and not stay stagnant.

What I thought was the most important of this piece is the career planning aspect of it especially since this semester I am finishing up my degree and starting on looking for a career, this also like points me in the write direction on a professional work future.

This notion is encapsulated in the phrase “Learn How You Fail,” which posits that true ingenuity stems not from sheer intellect but from character—specifically, the courage to face our shortcomings and adapt.

Personal Reaction

I found this pattern both challenging and refreshing. Initially, it’s discomforting to focus on failures rather than celebrate successes. However, Gawande’s approach—focusing on identifying and understanding the causes of our failures—provides a constructive framework for turning apparent setbacks into stepping stones.

This perspective is not just about acknowledging weaknesses but actively choosing which battles are worth fighting. The notion that not all failures need to be addressed equally, and some might even be embraced as limitations, is liberating. It helps in setting realistic goals and focusing efforts where they can truly make a difference.

Changes in Professional Perspective

As someone aspiring to thrive in a fast-evolving sector, this pattern has shifted my thinking towards a more adaptive and resilience-oriented professional mindset. The emphasis on continuous self-assessment and setting realistic boundaries resonates deeply. It underlines the importance of focusing on areas where I can excel and accepting areas where I may never be the best. This realization takes away the useless pursuit of perfection in every domain, instead encouraging a strategic approach to skill development and goal setting.

While I appreciate the core message of the pattern, I hold reservations about the practicality of some suggested exercises, such as writing and debugging code without initial testing. While this can reveal unforeseen errors and personal blind spots, it may not be the most efficient learning method for everyone. This approach could lead to frustration or demotivation, particularly for novices who might benefit more from immediate feedback and iterative learning.

Conclusion

“Learn How You Fail” is not just about understanding how to handle failure—it’s about strategically leveraging these insights to refine our skills, set achievable goals, and foster a mindset that views challenges as opportunities for growth. This pattern has encouraged me to embrace my limitations, prioritize my efforts, and continue pushing the boundaries of my capabilities with a clear and realistic vision.

Apprenticeship Patterns Introduction (CS 448)

I had thoroughly looked through chapter 1 “Software Craftsmanship Manifesto” and the introductions to chapters 2-6, and I had found some things that had made me feel anxious. I am not stating that there is anything wrong with chapter 1 or the introductions, but rather I learned about some things that I think I should have learned about earlier. One particular part of chapter 1 that caught my attention was a paragraph of “What is Apprenticeship”, where it had teased at something that relates to a struggle that I have; “Most people won’t have an opportunity to work in a formal apprenticeship where they are being mentored by software craftsmen. In reality, most people have to claw and scratch their apprenticeships out of less-than-ideal situations.” chapter 1 mostly described in short about how Apprenticeship is more about your “journey” rather than those that helped cultivate the goal that you have longed for, and that you have to find the answers all by yourself. As someone who has very little experience with Apprenticeship, it feels more like trying to put down all of your problems in pursuit of accomplishing much greater than your initial expectations.

I had said before, I do not have anything that I found wrong with anything I read from chapter 1 or the introductions to chapters 2-6. On the contrary however, I felt that the reading had not explained the “Accurate Self-Assessment” introduction very well. I may need to read more about it in the future, but I had felt that the thought of “comparing yourself to others to improve” did not sit very well with me. The reason I felt that you should not compare yourself to others is because we are all have our sights set on different ambitions. While I can understand why others find this part of the reading useful to find some inspiration for their own goals, we still have to find our answers all by ourselves at the end of the day. The “Perpetual Learning” introduction further explains that we need to have the desire to seek out knowledge regardless of our own circumstances in order to be inclined to take in all the tools and skills needed to achieve our goals.

Having explained chapter 5, I find that the introductions to chapters 3, 5 and 7 seem most relevant to me after reading all of chapter 1 and the following introductions. I think in my personal opinion that having a great interest in your field of study or your life-long dream requires that you need to look into your interests more in-depth and decide whether you would like to continue your career on your current trajectory or if you want to divert to a different career as a means of exploring your own interests.
